Encourage children to cycle to school

Why cycle to school?
Cycling to school is a fantastic way to start the day for children. Children who cycle to school arrive feeling more alert and ready to learn, thanks to the physical activity and fresh air. Studies show that children who engage in regular physical activity, such as cycling, show improved cognitive function and academic performance.
Riding a bike from a young age also sets them up for an active lifestyle that can continue into their adulthood, helping to boost cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles, and improve overall fitness.
There are also the mental health benefits associated with cycling. Getting out into the fresh air helps to reduce stress and anxiety in both adults and children. Learning to cycle, and the various life skills associated with understanding road safety and time management, gives children a sense of independence and confidence.
All in all, it’s a great skill for children to learn at a young age and practice regularly!
How do we get started?
1. Contact your school!
The first step is seeing what support and services are already available to you. Oxfordshire County Council offers a free travel plan tool available for all Oxfordshire schools. So, you may be surprised there may already loads of things going on! If there isn’t, request they consider organising or supporting cycle to school initiatives.
2. Participate in the Bike to School Week
Bike to School Week is an annual event that encourages students, parents, and school communities to embrace cycling as a fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. It typically takes place between September and October and only requires you to pledge to ride a bike to school that day. Find out more information from Bikeability here.
3. Make it fun through an interactive app
To make cycling even more enjoyable, consider using the BetterPoints app. BetterPoints rewards you for making positive changes like cycling instead of driving. By logging your cycling activities, you can earn points that can be redeemed for high street vouchers or donated to charity. The app also offers challenges and prizes, making the school run a fun and rewarding experience for children and parents alike.
