A couple riding bikes

It’s never too early or too late to learn to ride a bike! People young and old can benefit from learning a new skill, being more active and enjoying the outdoors. It is also well known that cycling releases ‘feel good hormones’ which helps to improve your mental health by reducing stress and anxiety. Here are a few other unexpected ways learning to cycle can work for you.

It creates greener surroundings

When you learn to ride a bike, you’re making a choice to leave the car at home. This creates a need for more car-free spaces! Not only does this reduce noise and pollution generated by cars, but it also provides more opportunities for adding in greenery. These green spaces are much more pleasant to spend time in for people and wildlife, helping to improve biodiversity at the same time.

It's a more resourceful use of space

The same area of a car can hold anywhere from 8 – 12 people on bikes, which leads to less congestion, and of course less need for car parking spaces!

It helps reduce our climate impact

Small swaps can have a big impact: switching just one car journey for a bike ride can reduce personal emissions by as much as a quarter or approximately 0.5 tonnes of CO2 per year! In other words, you’re not only learning a new skill and improving your health, but you’re also making a huge difference to reducing CO2 emissions.
